Geek Peek – PC Mods

While the vast majority of us plug along with our standard, off the shelf computers, there’s another group that likes to take things a little further.

I believe it all started with overclocking, although I don’t know that for a fact. Overclocking is where people push their computers to (and sometimes beyond) their limits. They add fans and cooling systems and other accessories to get their computers to run faster and harder than they were designed to do.

As they started modifying – or “modding” – for this purpose, other accessories began to be considered. After all, if you are running coolant through clear plastic tubing in your box, why not add an LED light so you can see it? And the next thing you know, the inside of your computer looks like this:

Naturally, when the guts of your computer are as lovely as that, you don’t want to hide it, right? So, they started installing windows into their cases so they could see inside. More mods followed. Now, you can find all kinds of customized PCs – some gorgeous, some outrageous – but all interesting.

PC modding has been around for a while now and is going pretty mainstream. You can even get a book to show you how to do it.

Modders used to have to design, cut and install their own windows into their PC cases. Now you can buy cases that come with windows, LEDs, and other goodies already installed, and modding kits to make it easy, not to mention pre-modded keyboards and mice!

This is a topic that I could go on for a long time about, as there are so many cool things being done. Suffice it to say that my geekiness is *very* aroused by this kinda thing. One of these days, I’m gonna get off my lazy butt and learn how to do it!

Have you ever modded your box? Tell us about it!
