From Science Fiction to Reality

Do you realize how similar to science fiction our real lives are becoming? Look around you and think about all the things you take for granted that past generations would have considered total fantasy – computers, stealth jets, space travel, wireless telephones, even fax machines!

Sometimes, bleeding edge technology seems somewhat familiar, as if we’ve seen it somewhere before. Recognize any of these?

Ah, good old Star Trek. Besides green belly dancers, it gave us tricorders, sickbay diagnostic beds and voice activated computers:

Remember Minority Report? Check it – virtual keyboards are on the market and holographic monitor displays are in the works:

Then there’s the Terminator movies. Even bad robots can give us some good ideas like battlefield robots and robot scientists. I, Robot was apparently also on to something – robot companions are on the way.

Don’t worry, though, there’s already a book out on how to survive a robot uprising! Be sure to pick yours up now so you’ll be ahead of the rush.

Even the Jetsons knew what was up:

And if you think that’s never really going to happen – did you know that Nasa has a Highway in the Sky program so we can fly our cars safely? Check out this old CBS article for the whole story – here. Yeah, it’s an old article, but with the framework in place, and the technology now available, it wouldn’t be hard for someone to make it a reality.

Either the science fiction writers are one step ahead of the scientists, or the scientists are getting ideas from the sci-fi writers. Which do you think it is? And what do you think the next big sci-fi invention will be?

I just wish they’d hurry up and invent a matter transporter! Just think of the traffic relief….
